If we are to love our neighbors, before doing anything else we must see our neighbors. With our imagination as well as our eyes, that is to say like artists, we must see not just their faces but the life behind and within their faces.

I think the most beautiful work happens when people work intuitively. for so much of my life, i used to believe being "sensitive" was a bad thing - that it made me too vulnerable. but the truth is that this gave me a gift: to feel & connect with others deeply. being attuned to people's emotions means you can create a space for them to be heard & understood intimately.
There's a strength & beauty when you're in tune with what your gut says & choose to follow it. it is here where you create your best work because it means you trust yourself & it shows up in what you create. I want to tell you the stories of women who do that.

INSIGHT INTO MY PROCESS
it all begins with a very intimate conversation. I place myself in their environment, their home, in a very comfortable setting to create a safe space for our conversation to freely flow out. It is in this space of encouraging truthfulness where we have the opportunity to be known.
What was your childhood like? What was it filled with?
Describe your creative process to me.
How do you want to be remembered?
As this conversation is happening, I listen for visual cues - a memory, an experience, or a belief that I will later take and translate visually. In my conversation with Katie, the components of her story that really stood out to me were: lessons from her childhood, her creative approach, and healing in stillness. I took those ideas to form the visuals for her story which you can see in my mood boards throughout.
"my hope is That when someone encounters my arrangements that it would change their perspective about life itself. when you create something that won't exist in a couple of days. you have to be very present in that moment.
i think that Encountering great beauty isn't limited by the amount of time that it lives. Beauty is meant to be enjoyed in the moment, and that moment is enough."

WHAT I'VE LEARNED
What I took away most from Katie is how often I have failed to see what a gift stillness is. How hard it can be to sit in it, but how necessary it is. Some of us have to learn to sit in stillness because our hearts and minds are racing and we deceive ourselves with the idea that idle moments are unproductive. But in QUIETUDE we can hear and see so much. Katie was forced to be still due to illness, and in that place of stillness not only did her body begin to heal, but she uncovered one of her greatest gifts. That is what stillness can do.
